NHPHI project closing event

The closing event of the No to harassment of disabled immigrants (NHPHI) project took place on Thursday, February 1, 2024.

As a reminder, the NHPHI project began in September 2022 with the aim of increasing knowledge and awareness of harassment situations in the workplace, with a view to acquiring the skills to take action. The project received financial support from the Commission des normes de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST). It was carried out in partnership with organizations such as JURIPOP, the Centre d’aide aux victimes d’actes criminels (CAVAC), and the the Group for help and information on harassment in the workplaceGroupe d’aide et d’information sur le harcèlement au travail in the province of Quebec.

Mission and objectives

The NHPHI project is part of AMEIPH’s broader mission to develop the full potential of people with disabilities from immigrant backgrounds, by increasing their power to act, in order to facilitate their integration and inclusion in the host society.

Empowerment means preventing harassment in all its forms, whether in the workplace or in other areas of society (work, education, health, administration, sport, etc.). This requires a collective awareness of values such as mutual respect, communication and solidarity.

The closing event was an opportunity to highlight the project’s significant results and raise awareness of harassment against disabled people with a migrant background. At the heart of the project were the Forum Theatre series, in which AMEIPH members enthusiastically took part. These activities, alongside a series of expert workshops, enriched understanding of psychological harassment in the workplace, ownership of the whistle-blowing process and offered practical tools.

A crucial aspect of the NHPHI project has been the close collaboration with partner organizations. The exchange of information and best practices between the various partners raised awareness of the reality of harassment experienced by people with disabilities from immigrant backgrounds, helping to improve and strengthen prevention and intervention strategies in these situations.

Acknowledgements

Participants at the closing session warmly thanked Ms Anne Marie St Louis, praised for the quality of her inclusive, convivial and creative staging methods.

During the forum theater sessions, she was able to reveal talents in the members. The participants also congratulated the AMEIPH office team on the success of the project, which was brought to a successful conclusion by Ms. Célia Missigbeto.

Creation of awareness-raising tools

One of the project’s notable successes has been the creation and dissemination of awareness-raising tools, such as brochures and video clips, designed to broaden the impact of the anti-harassment message for disabled people from immigrant backgrounds.
